Foodies welcome!

Since its beginnings in 2013, Odprta kuhna (the Open kitchen), the Slovenian favourite when it comes to food markets, is bringing together around 60 of Slovenia's best eateries from all over the country. Every sunny Friday, mid-March to the end of October, the Pogačarjev Square in Ljubljana is filled with stalls where the country's best chefs and food gurus are preparing delicious food in a beautiful open-air setting.

From A(cai bowls) to Ž(likrofi)

It's a truly varied foodie experience as each stall serves something completely different including traditional local classics, modern takes on Slovenian food, fine dining meals and international dishes from all over the world, which brings the grand total to more than 150 dishes each Friday.

No reservations!

Just choose the dishes and drinks that tickle your fancy, find your own special spot at the square, kick back and enjoy! The Open kitchen is where the Slovenian culture of laid back Friday get-togethers meets the love of good food, where locals mingle with tourists and where everyone enjoys a great dining experience in the sun, overlooking Plečnik’s elegant market colonnade.

And you're not the only one enjoying the abundance - all the remaining food at the end of the event is donated to charity, to give back to the wonderful community and help build a sustainable future for everyone.


Committed to the environment

In 2016 Ljubljana was the European green capital and the Open Kitchen is still staying committed to caring for the environment. That is why we call on our vendors to use reusable or biodegradable packaging, we recycle all waste and at the end of the event donate the remaining food to people in need instead of throwing it away. Visitors are also encouraged to recycle and we are glad to help with any advice on correct waste separation. We also like to see the visitor traveling to Open kitchen with public transport, by bike or on foot and thus keep our air cleaner.

Awarded excellence and quality

In January 2014 we were awarded with Jakob, the award for excellence and quality in tourism of the Alpe-Adria region that is given yearly by the Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Awarded innovation

In October 2014 we won the Sejalec, awarded to us for the most innovative Slovenian tourist product of the last two years. The Sejalec is the annual award of SPIRIT Slovenia, Slovenian Tourist Board for innovation and creativity in tourism.
